Tuesday's Tip

I have 2 friends who gave birth to baby boys last week. One of them is local and my MOPS group is preparing meals for her. They are using a site to coordinate the meals called Meal Train. I had never heard of it before & wanted to share it w/ you. It had the dates available for people to sign up to bring food, dislikes & likes of the meal recipients, and a place for people to share what dish they would be bringing. A great idea to use next time you are helping a friend out w/ meals! :)

Summer Monday Musings

Happy Monday! The winner of the CSN Stores $60 Gift Certificate is #134 Melissa B. Congrats!!

I don't know what I was thinking. I pictured this summer being relaxing, not a lot going on, no schedules tying us down. HA! With 3 kids, including a 7 month old baby...the joke was on me! We are several weeks into summer & we are just now getting to relax a little. It just seems we have been going non-stop! One thing we have been doing though is sleeping in. Sure is gonna hurt when school starts back in a little over a month!

I was at Target last week & admiring all the fun party Summer accessories they have. I always have thought it would be so fun to have an outdoor party complete w/ the galvanized tub of drinks...cute cups.....our gorgeous hydrangeas in vases, tiki torches....children laughing & playing....good food...good friends.

Then, reality sets in.

Every time we set foot outside we get EAT up w/ mosquitoes. Both of my kids look like they have some sort of disease w/ red welps on their legs covered w/ white paste. Even I match them right now. (The white pastes is dried toothpaste...one of the few things I have found to really stop the itching!)

I live in Georgia. Can you say 95 degrees and 100% humidity? That spells M-I-S-E-R-Y for me!!

So, what's a girl to do?

Keep daydreaming I guess! :)

I found some great outdoor stuff as well as good gifts for him at Brookstone.com to share w/ ya.

Love these Adirondack chairs...especially the red one!

How fun is this! One thing I usually do in the summer is try to get the kids to the pool at least once a week. I am finding that not as pleasant this summer w/ a baby in tow. Maybe next year! :)
Does this look inviting or what?

Well, enough of my ramblings. I have just discovered I have about 3 diapers left so it appears as though I'll be loading up the kids and heading to Target. That will prolly be our big outing for the day. A little jewelry & shoe shopping for Mom....toy shopping for the kids.... in the good ole Air Conditioning...sounds like a plan for this lazy Monday to me! :)
What are you doing to keep the kids entertained this summer?

Saving Money While Moving

With the current economy there are a lot of people downsizing...or taking advantage of great home prices and upsizing. If you are one of the families that will be moving this summer, I have a few moving money saving tips to share with you today.

1. If you can, pack & move yourself. Enlist friends & family to help.

2. Don't forget to think about the moeny you will need to to settle in a new home. Especially if your home is new construction. You will then need money at some point for blinds, landscaping, possibly paint, garage door opener, etc.

3. If you don't have a truck or know someone with one, you will need to rent a truck/uhaul. Be sure you shop around on rates for those as well.

4. A lot of times you can obtain free boxes from Walmart or local grocery stores.

5. If you choose to use a moving company, be sure you get quotes from several different Moving companies.

If you have more money saving tips while moving, please leave a comment & share!

P.S. Congrats to the winner of the Kahve Koffee giveaway - #18 Paula Michele!

Kahve Koffee would like to extend a discount to Gift Closet readers - 15% off! Use the code CONTEST15 upon check out. Click here to shop & enjoy! :)

Thoughts for Thursday by guest blogger Emily Farmer

Tongue Taming

For such a small muscle in your body the Bible tells us it's pretty powerful. James says it well doesn't he? James 3:5, "Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark." The question you have to ask yourself is- Are you going to use it in a positive way or a negative one. There is scripture upon scripture that warns us of using our tongues in a negative way. I love this one that is found in Proverbs 21:23, "Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble." Very simple! Just like my mama use to say, "If you can't say nothing nice, say nothing at all." Good advice that has kept me out of trouble a number of times.

However I will tell you that a number of times my tongue has gotten me into trouble. I am most often reminded of this when dealing with my 8 year old. Sometimes I forget that I am the mom, the leader, the mentor and I fall into the trap of being a bit of a smart mouth. I have been known even at times of saying hurtful things. OUCH!! Nothing like God our loving Father using the words and mind of an 8 year old to set me straight. I often do apologize and say I'm sorry. Then I pray for God's forgiveness and ask him to remove those hurtful words from that little 8 year old mind so that's not what he remembers me for. We are only human and humans are not perfect and we make mistakes. So if you find yourself needing to say I'm sorry, swallow your pride and just do it. Your heart will feel so much better in the long run.

When I ran across this verse I immediately fell in love with it. It's Psalm 19:14, "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer." One thing that drew me to this verse was it's exactly my hearts desire. Meditating on his words and saying and doing things that is pleasing to him is exactly what I want to do all the days of my life. That's the character I want to possess. If I am meditating on HIS word then I am doing what 1 Corinthians 13:7 says "Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." I am showing and doing HIS word toward others. I am loving others like HIM. I am a trustworthy friend. I have hope in HIM and HIS word. I persevere the most important things in my heart and know to whom to be thankful I have all of them.

I pray you will consider claiming at least one of these verses and applying them to your own life.

Tuesday's Tip-Reward System for Kids

Yesterday was the 1st official day of summer. With 3 children, summer starts for us the day school is out. I really am enjoying not having a strict schedule and being able to sleep in. What I don't enjoy, and I am sure most Moms don't, is the sibling fights & trying to keep the kids entertained during these long lazy days of summer. My 4 year old has been acting out a little more than usual lately. There have been days where I went thought all the discipline steps I normally go through and nothing worked. Ever have one of those days? And sometimes taking away tv or computer privileges makes it even worse cuz then they are really bored!

Last week I was sitting in a DR office & picked up a "Family Fun" magazine to read. There was an article from a Mom who had started this reward system. I implemented it last week & it has worked so well that I thought I would share it w/ you.

I went to Target and got some tall clear plastic cups for $1.99 each. I bought some fun stickers & let the kids decorate their cups and put their initial on their cup as well. I got a couple of bags of marbles. For each "chore" the kids do they get a marble. Here is the sheet I typed up for the frig:

Chores:

1 Marble:
-Brush Your Teeth
-Fold Laundry
-Put Your Laundry Away
-Set Table
-Make Your Bed
-Say Your Prayers

2 Marbles:
-Pick Up Your Toys
-Straighten Your Room
-Make Your Own Breakfast
-Make your own sandwich
-Empty Trash Cans
-Water Plants

3 Marbles:
-Unload Dishwasher
-Load Dishwasher
-Dust
-Vacuum (Gracie)
-Clean Sinks (Gracie)
-Clean Toilets (Gracie)

Rewards

-Have a friend sleepover
-Date w/ Dad
-Date w/ Mom
-Have a friend over to play & watch a movie w/ popcorn & candy
-Trip to Michael’s & pick out anything you’d like
-Trip to Hobby Lobby & pick out anything you’d like
-Trip to Target & pick out anything you’d like

The author/Mom shared how it worked for her & I must say I have had the same results. As you can see above they can earn different amounts of marbles according to what they do. My daughter is 7 so there are certain things she can do but my 4 year old can't. They also can have a marble taken away if they argue or misbehave. When the cup is full (author said it takes her kids about a month to fill one), they get to choose one of the rewards.

The best thing has been how eager (especially my 7 year old) has been to do things around the house now. She actually goes to the list each day & tries to pick out chores to do just to earn marbles. The kids were getting out of the car the other day discussing how they were going to go in and make their beds, etc. to earn marbles. It is like something out of a "Leave it to Beaver" episode!

If your discipline system is not working so great and the kids are driving you batty, give this one a try. So far it has worked out wonderfully for us!

Friday's Feature

One of the early blogging buddies I found was Leah, from BookieBoo. Bookieboo is a fitness site for Moms. I love fitness so that was right up my alley. Leah has ventured out and also started a site called Mamavation. Mamavation is also geared towards helping women find a healhtier lifestyle. Love that!!

Here is the inspiration behind Mamavation:
"Mamavation was created as a way for me to combat obesity in families. Obesity is learned in the family unit. We know that now. Very little of it is actually heredity. So if your parents are overweight or obese, you are very likely to suffer the same fate. Because the mom is the gatekeeper to the family, it's only through her that real change can be created. She controls the pocketbook and the family calendar. She has the power to make changes within the family unit and change the lives of her children. After my own weight loss, and going from a size 22 to a size 6, I wanted to give back and share my knowledge and passion for healthy living. Thus I created a campaign boot camp that helped moms create a healthy lifestyle in 7 short weeks. Those moms are referred to as the Mamavation Moms. So far the Mamavation Moms have lost over 111 lbs. collectively in the campaign. We have had some fantastic results. In fact, Alyssa Becthold (@alyssabecthold) has lost 74 lbs. so far after going through the program last November. Another part of the Mamavation campaign is the Sistahood. The Mamavation Sistahood is a healthy living sorority in social media. And it's a real sorority. You have to pledge to get in. Sistas create Mamavation Monday posts and update each other on how they are doing learning healthy living. That process is slow and gradual, but each Sista benefits from the love and support they get from each other. I'm starting up Mamavation campaign #5 very soon and will be accepting applications for Mamavation Moms on June 21st. After applications are submitted, I choose 5 finalists that go up for a vote of the people and announce the new Mamavation Moms during a twitter party on July 12th. Here is the application link with details, http://www.mamavation.com/2009/05/application.html. "
Leah before:

And after with her family!

You go girl!!!
Be sure to check out her sites and get started on your healthy lifestyle today! :)

Thoughts for Thursday

Ruth Bible Study
by guest blogger Emily Farmer

I have just gotten my book to start a summer bible study. It's the study of Ruth. Ruth is a well known character in the Bible. I am very excited to do this study. I love the story of Ruth, she shows such faith, patience, kindness and even possesses homemaking skills. The book also shows that God takes care of those who put their trust in HIM.

Ruth has such a story to share, even though she has a such a small book in the Bible. First a little history about Ruth. She is the great grandmother of David. Ruth was married to Mahlon whose mother was Naomi. Naomi's husband and two sons died which left Naomi alone with her two daughters-in-law, one being Ruth. Naomi decided to move back to Israel and Ruth insisted on going with her. Ruth later married a man named Boaz after their return back to Israel.

One of the things I love most about this story is the love and devotion that Ruth has for her mother-in-law, Naomi. I love the verse 1:16 where Ruth says to her mother-in-law, "Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God." Now that's true dedication, devotion, and love. To go where your family is not, is a big commitment. I can't wait to learn more about Ruth's life.

I am doing this study with Beth Moore facilitating it via her blog if you would like to join me. Go to her blog and click the link on the right hand side that says Siesta Summer Bible study III. It's not to late to join the first blog study will be June 22. I did a study with her last year and it was a lot of fun. All you have to do is order your book and make time to do the study on your own then join Beth for her teaching part every two weeks. It's only a 6 week study. All the info is on her blog. Here's her blog address http://blog.lproof.org

If you don't do this study I encourage you to do some type of study and stay in HIS word. The only way to have a relationship with God is to have fellowship with HIM and that means meet HIM daily.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks Emily! I personally have been looking for a summer Bible Study I can do from home and this may be the one for me. Thanks for sharing! -Heather-
Kahve Koffee Giveaway
Coffee anyone? I just started drinking coffee within the past couple of years & must say I really enjoy a good cup of coffee now. Maybe it has something to do w/ small children keeping me running & the need to re-energize. ~wink~ If you like coffee, then you are going to want to enter this giveaway today from Kahve Koffee. They are giving away any 12 oz blend on their site to one lucky Gift Closet reader!
The story behind Kahve Koffee:
As one of the Boston area’s first gourmet coffee companies, Espresso Express introduced Kahvé Koffee in 1983. With their exceptional Kahvé brand, they soon established themselves as the clear leader in the fine art of sourcing quality coffee beans and roasting specialty coffees, setting a new standard of excellence for the coffee service industry.
It was a time when it was virtually impossible to find a memorable cup of coffee in the region. Even the most superb restaurants could not boast of having the "perfect cup of coffee" that would justify ending a gourmet meal. Espresso Express changed all that when they began working with local chefs, restaurateurs, cafes and hotels. Soon blends were designed, roasts were perfected and the landscape dramatically changed as Kahvé Koffees became the number one choice for all distinguished dining establishments. They had all the ingredients for success: access to perfect coffee beans from the world’s best plantations, a master roaster and an obsession with quality. They combined all resources and the result was Kahvé Koffee.
Win It! How to enter to win a 12 oz blend of your choice from Kahve Koffee:
1. Leave a comment here letting me know which coffee blend you are most interested in from Kahve Koffee. Be sure to include your email address in your comment if it is not on your profile.
Back From The Stone Age
Hallelujah my internet is back! After a week and a half of intermittent internet service, then 4 days of no internet and no emails.....it is finally back on. YAY!!! I feel like I have been in the stone age. I have had to look up people's phone numbers in the phone book. "Do we even have phone books?", my husband asked. I actually had to write checks and mail my bills too! ~Gasp~ Anywho-I celebrated by having a coke. Yes, a coke. I don't normally drinks soft drinks, but this was cause for a celebratory non-alcoholic drink since it's 3pm & I have 3 kids to look after. So...enough of my babbling. The winner of the Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms Cookbook is #43 Gretta. Congrats! I'll be back in a little bit w/ a giveaway! :)
Tuesday's Tip
Saw this in one of my parenting magazines & with a baby in the house myself, thought this was a good idea...
Nervous about trimming your baby's nails?
Try it when baby's sleeping. Or skip the clippers and use a soft emery board instead.
What a great idea!
Make It Monday
Thanks for your concern & comments about fixing my computer. I'm working at lightning fast speed this AM before it drops the connection again. Bellsouth is supposed to come work on it today...it is still not fixed.
Enough of my problems, and onto some healthy recipes for you! I've been on a bit of a health kick lately w/ it being swimsuit season and all. Here are a few I thought looked healthy & tasty too.
Pecan & Dijon Crusted Chilean Sea Bass Over Zucchini Slaw from the Picky Palate.
Yum! Part of my hindrance to eating healthier is that my family is super picky. My husband does not eat veggies at all.....never has. (Speaking of him, it's our 13 anniversary today...yay for us! :)
What's a girl to do? Cook 2 meals every night? I don't think so! I usually try to cook at least 1 veggie for me, but I so would love to eat really healthy each night. ~Sigh~
Looking for a healthy potato chip? Check out these Homemade Garlic and Olive Oil Baked Chips!
Here is a recipe I discovered last year on Oprah.com and have been using it and loving it. Yum!Mushroom Quesadillas on Whole Wheat Tortillas
Hope you enjoyed these tasty & healthy recipes!
P.S. I have an opening next week for my Friday's Feature. Do you have a business you would like featured or so you know of someone you'd like to see highlighted on The Gift Closet? Don't be shy...give me a shout! Email me at heatherldt @ bellsouth dot net. Thanks!! :)
I haven't heard back from the company that was to be featured today. Add to that the 6 plus hours this week I have spent trying to sort out email/virus/computer problems & I am one frustrated Mama!! Lost my entire address book & now it appears as though all the wonderful sites I have bookmarked for the past several years are gone. ~~Sigh~~ Hopefully I can get this sorted out over the weekend & be back Monday w/ a fabulous post for ya. Have a good weekend & wish me luck in fixing this darn thing! :)
Thoughts for Thursday
Praying
by guest blogger Emily Farmer
If you ask me I would say that praying is an important part of my day. I often find myself engaged in prayer with God continually through out the day. When I am in HIS word and praying scripture I am more aware of HIS voice and what he is trying to tell me. I can also see where he is leading me. The Bible tells us that we are given a special helper called "The Holy Spirit" when we accept Jesus Christ as our personal savior. This helper, or also known as counselor, is there to be our conscience in the sense of correcting our thoughts or attitude, to encourage us on, and to lead and guide us. Here is a verse I ran across recently and I thought I'd share it. It comes from Gal. 5:25 "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."
You might be thinking I don't have time to pray enough to make it count. My friend, you are mistakenly wrong. Every prayer you utter from your mouth is heard by God and important to HIM. Prayer is our way to communicate and talk to HIM. It's very hard to understand especially when we can't see God as a person but, we just have to have faith in knowing what we can not see. God wants us to come near to HIM, as James 4:8 says "Come near to God and he will come near to you."
Another verse on prayer that comes to mind is Phil. 4:6-7, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This is a verse I have prayed a number of times when my husband and I had a big decision to make. We are not to worry about anything in all things big and small we are to take them (worry) to the feet of Jesus. He's the only one who can answer our many prayers.
God tells us in 2nd Corinthians that HIS grace is all we need. 2 Cor. 12:9-10, "And He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.' Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore, I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake, for when I am weak, then I am strong." (NASV) I just love this verse it's so powerful if you break it down.
In 1st Thessalonians we are given 3 steps to take in praying.
Step one: Always be joyful- in everything you have and do be joyful.
Step two: Pray continually -to me this is through out the day every day, hour, minute or when ever something crosses your mind.
The third and last step is to give thanks. Enough said. "BE THANKFUL". 1 Thess. 5:16-18 "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
Take the time today to stop and pray, be joyful and give thanks!
Win It Wednesday
I love food & I love recipes, so I'm super excited to share this giveaway and review w/ you today. I received a copy of the book, Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms, and have 1 to giveaway as well!! Who isn't busy these days? Even if you are not a Mom, there are some great make-ahead recipes in this book.
Warning! The following pictures may cause you to drool excessively on your keyboard. :)
Peanut Butter Kisses Cookies
Sloppy Joes
and Crab Cakes
Jane Doiron is the author of this cookbook & here is her inspiration for it:
"As a busy mom with sports schedules and very little time to cook after work, I found make-ahead meals to be very helpful. I would prepare part of the meal a day ahead or make extra meals on the weekend and freeze them. I always thought about having my own cookbook. So when I learned about self-publishing on-line, I began turning my favorite recipes into make-ahead meals for my own cookbook. I figured if these tasty make-ahead recipes helped me...it would help other parents as well."
What I like about the "Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms" cookbook:
1. Fabulous recipes! You know how some cookbooks have recipes you've seen a hundred times? Not this one!
2. Easy to read.
3. Categorized by Appetizers, Breakfast & Brunch, Dessert, Main Dishes, Side Dishes, & Soups.
4. This cookbook is unique in that the meals can be prepared in advance, frozen, then thawed out for later use. It gives specific instructions for how to do each, cooking times when thawed, etc. Of course, you can always cook & eat it fresh as well.
What I didn't like about the cookbook:
1. I'm a very visual person, so I would have liked to see more pictures. Still a great cookbook w/ wonderful recipes though. :)
Want It? Click here to shop.
Click here to catch some other fabulous recipes on her blog.
Win It! How to enter to win a copy of this cookbook:
CSN Stores Reviews
Ever heard of CSN Stores? They have the largest selection and amount of online stores I have ever seen! You literally could spend hours perusing their sites & products. I have not been disappointed with any of their products yet either! I received a.......
McGowan Tuftop Marble Cutting Board $19.95
I chose this cutting board because plastic ones seem to wear out so quickly. I'm thinking Marble will hold up much longer.
Here is what I like about the McGowan Tuftop Marble Cutting Board:
1. Pretty enough to leave out on your counter. You could also use it as a serving tray.
2. Good size - 12" W x 9" D
3. Don't have to worry about it breaking or having a lot of scratch marks or stains on it due to it being marble.
4. Can use as a trivet as well. It is made to withstand heat from dishes direct form the oven.
5. McGowan provides a 3 year warranty.
What I didn't like about it:
1. Nothing. A very nice cutting board with multiple uses!
Click here to view this cutting board and other great items at CSN Stores.
I also received this toaster to review.....
Proctor-Silex 4- Slice Chrome / Black Toaster $24.99
The toaster I had was a white 2-slice small toaster with the plastic melted off the sides and it was less than a year old. Lesson learned...invest in a decent toaster if you are going to use it daily! :)
What I like about this Proctor-Silex 4-Slice Chrome Black Toaster:
1. Cool Wall Sides. This was important to me w/ small children around.
2. I like the "updated" look of it. It is nice enough to leave out on your counter if you need to.
3. 4 slice toaster and the slots are wide enough for bagels.
4. "Toast Boost" feature lifts the pieces higher so it is easier for you to pull out.
5. Has an auto shut-off feature as well.
6. Evenly heated the food.
What I didn't like about it:
1. It was larger than I expected & the cord was kind of short. You need to be able to plug it in close to the wall to use it. Otherwise, it's a great product, and I would still recommend it! :)
Want It? Click here to visit CSN Stores.
Psstt......I'm starting a new giveaway tomorrow and another on Thursday that you won't want to miss. See you tomorrow!! ~Giddy~
My best friend flew in from Texas and joined us. Lots of yummy food (my fav part!).....
How cute is this sundae for the kids? See the mouse's tail aka cherry stem? Love it!
And so many pretty places to see!
