Thoughts for Thursday

I received this email last week & I thought I'd share it. It is a wonderful article about what an affect we have on our children's lives on a daily basis. It's like that saying, "If Momma Ain't Happy, Ain't Nobody Happy". As redneck as that sounds, it's true! If I'm in a bad mood, it seems to affect everyone in my house. What a good reminder...............

Controlling the Weather

While teachers can have a lifelong effect on the way students think,
psychologist Haim Ginott has focused on a more immediate aspect of impact: the
creation of a positive or negative physical and emotional environment that can
determine the quality of a child's life.

"I've come to a frightening conclusion," he said. "I am the decisive element in
the classroom. My personal approach creates the climate. My daily mood makes the
weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life
miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. It is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated, and a child humanized or dehumanized."
Yet as profound as this observation is for professional educators, it's even
more so for parents. A parent's power to create the daily climate and lasting
environment in which a child grows is so awesome it must be used consciously and
responsibly.

Since our daily moods make the weather, we should try to shield our children
from the thunder and lightning of our frustrations and anger. Instead of the
dark clouds of cynicism, fear and depression, we should discipline our own
emotions and give them the light and warmth of love, hope and good cheer.
Conscious efforts to be positive, enthusiastic, and supportive can have a huge
impact not only on the emotional well-being of our children, but on their
ability to experience the joys and pains of childhood in healthy and
constructive ways.

Win It Wednesday

CONTEST CLOSED

I'm so excited to start Win It Wednesday! Ironically, my daily devo today from www.proverbs31.org was about giving.

“In everything I did, I showed that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said,

"It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35 (NIV)

Now I know this really means more of giving of yourself, your time, etc. by preparing a meal for a friend in need, taking care of someone's child when they need a break, sending a note to someone who is hurting, or just being there for a friend or family member. But I still think it's lots of fun to give stuff away! So, here's how Win It Wednesday works.

Every Wednesday I will announce the winner from the previous week's giveaway, and announce a new giveaway. So there should always be a giveaway going on at The Gift Closet! Feel free to click on the little envelope at the bottom of this post and send it to a friend. Also, you can subscribe to the posts at the top left hand corner.

So, here is the first giveaway.........

Here are a few comments about the Body Butter:

"I have put the Soy Body Butter on my hands every night before bed and it has made my nails so strong!" Cindy - Texas

"I put the Body Butter on some poison ivy and it cleared up the next day." Vicki-Georgia

"I have been getting so many compliments on my skin lately. I've been telling everyone about the Soy Whipped Body Butter. I use it on my face several times a day and my skin looks younger. I've used many other skin care lines, but nothing has ever made such a noticeable difference." Rita - Texas

"We use the Body Butter for our Body Polishes. We ran out and our customers were saying "We want the Body Butter back." The Body Butter is a top-seller for us." Spa in Georgia

"I use it on my son for Eczema and it has really helped." Emily - Georgia

"I have very, very dry skin that is allergic to most soaps and lotions. I have even had trouble with lotions my dermatologist has recommended over the years. I must tell you that the body cream I purchased a few weeks ago has been a miracle treatment for me. My hands have never felt better. My daughter is a physician, so she washes her hands hundreds of times a day. Unfortunately, she has inherited my dry skin. I gave her a jar of the cream for Easter. She, too, has experienced miraculous results. For someone who has tried to use Lubriderm for years to help my skin, your Body Butter has been an instant relief! THANK YOU!!!" Jone - Georgia

"I have very dry areas on my hands & feet. I have used Aveeno & a lot of other products, but the Body Butter gives me the ultimate relief for my dry skin. As a woman of color, I used to continuously apply lotion to my dry areas throughout the day.God Bless! Heather you have a great product on your hands!!" Shontell - Georgia

"We have a scrapbooking cafe in the same complex as us, a lot of the women tried the body butter and loved it. They are always working with their hands & like them moisturized, but most products leave a film on the paper when handling them. Your products did not." Tara - New Jersey

"One day while picking something up at the store, the cashier asked me "what smelled so good". Since I don't wear perfume (I'm allergic to it), I told him it had to be the lotion (body butter) I was wearing. I put my arm up near his nose for a whiff and he said, "Yes that's it. Boy that smells good!!" Needless to say, I think your products are wonderful." Cindy - Georgia

"I recently ran out of pomade to smooth my hair on a really humid day. I was already using the Body Butter on my face & decided to glide the remaining butter on my hands through my hair. Not only did it smell great, it stopped the flyaways!" Alicia - Florida

"Just wanted to tell you that I started putting a couple of the Body Butters in the frig...and talk about refreshing...WOW!" Sharon - Georgia

Tuesday's Tip

I'm a big fan of movies...all kinds of movies. I used to have the Blockbuster membership where they mailed you a different movie each week. I cancelled it not long ago cuz it seemed like there were so many crappy movies out there filled with drugs, murder, violence, people being tortured, etc. That's just not my cup of tea!
Pop in a Jenn Lopez chick flick, Steel Magnolias (even though I cry every time), or The Last Samurai w/ Tom Cruise. Well, that's not really a chick flick, but anyway....and I'm happy...maybe with a little chocolate too...and some popcorn...ok, anyway!

So, last week the hubby & I rented "21" w/ Kevin Spacey & Kate Bosworth I believe. It's the movie about the Harvard students who learned how to count cards, went to Vegas, and made hundreds of thousands of dollars doing it, till they got caught. It's based on a true story.

Now, why can't I be that dadgum smart?!? All I want is just 1 weekend of that....go to Vegas for a couple of nights, make $40,000, come home. I could do that.

Ok, well not really. I guess my conscience would get the best of me, right??? ;)

So for now I guess I'll have to settle for making $40 instead of $40,000 for a couple of days work.

If you're a SAHM like me, or just anyone who's looking to make a few extra bucks, you might want to check this out. I don't think it's big bucks, but it's bucks. And with the current state of the economy, I think we can all use a few extra of those!

I stumbled across a couple of money making opportunities that I thought I'd pass along.......

This is a link to an adorable website called, What's That Smell? The name alone cracks me up....as a SAHM I def can relate to that question!
This specific page is all about getting paid to do surveys from legit companies, from home.

Laurie @ tip Junkie is looking for Sales Reps:

I'm all about making some extra bucks, so I can stay home w/ my little Blue Eyed Blondies...

Anywho, that's all for Tuesdays' Tip! Be sure to come by tomorrow for my very first giveaway...I'm so excited!!!

Make It Monday

Welcome to the first Make It Monday! Make It Monday will bring you a variety of things you can make. Everything from recipes, to bath & body products, to jewelery, etc.

Today I want to share a wonderful recipe for a homemade Chicken Pot Pie & why this recipe means so much to me.

My firstborn daughter arrived 6 weeks early, without any prior warning whatsoever. Being a control freak & a huge planner, this really threw me for a loop, and taught me some important life lessons. During that time we had many friends from church & family members who took good care of us....bringing much needed preemie diapers, clothes, and wonderful homemade meals. Would you not agree as women we tend to "take care" of people by feeding them?

A friend we went to church with at that time, Paige Kee, brought a wonderful homemade chicken pot pie & a yummy strawberry shortcake. How I remember that specific meal 6 years later, I don't know.

Here's what's so great about this recipe.
I do not like chicken pot pie.
I've tried many microwave versions, etc. trying to match this one...and none match it. I remember eating that chicken pot pie for days, even when my family staying with & helping me at that time , were begging to go out & get something else! ;) For some reason, it was truly a comfort food to me at that time.
Maybe cuz that little Chicken Pot Pie, along with so much of the other food brought to our home, was made with love.

Homemade Chicken Pot Pie

3 Chicken Breasts, shredded or cut up
2 Cans mixed veggies (Veg-All) - drained
2 cans Cream of Potato Soup (or cream of chicken)
3/4 c. milk
1/4 tsp black pepper
1 Pillsbury Ready-made pie crust-not frozen-in the dairy section, red flat box, 2 pie crusts per box

Combine all ingredients. Put 1 crust in pie dish. Pour mixture in the crust, and 2nd crust goes on top. Pinch crust to seal. Slit top crust several times on top....or poke holes in the top with a fork. Bake @ 375 for 40-45 minutes. Enjoy!

My First Friday's Feature!

Today is my First Friday's Feature. I am so excited to feature my friend, Randi Kelly. My hubby & I have been going to church w/ her for years. She can paint like no other! I've never known anyone who can paint so freely like her. She helped my husband paint both of our children's rooms & they are awesome!
Her work has been in "Romantic Homes" magazine & on the HGTV website.
Randi is a full-time teacher, but friends and family have been on her for years to go into this full-time. I know she's an awesome teacher, but who knows what this artistic girls future holds!
In addition to being an awesome artist, she is one of the most humble people you will ever meet! I briefly told her the other night what I was doing on this blog & that I wanted to feature her. She emailed me some pics. even though she wasn't still sure what for. She even suggested I feature someone else. She is too sweet. :)
Well, enough of the chit-chat...onto the proof!

These are pics. of my son's room. My husband helped her some, but all the creative painting you see in here was done by Randi. Wish you could see her painting up close...it's amazing the detail she does so well! This room was on HGTV's website.
These are some pics. of my daughter's room. This room was also on HGTV's website.

I have to give credit to my Mom for making the pillows, curtains, comforter, & pillow shams for this room. Some lamps she has done.........

The above lamp & material went in this adorable nursery............

Custom table.
More of her art........
Aren't these hand-painted Santas gorgeous?

Does this girl possess some skills or what? ;) Feel free to show us some love & pass this post along or leave a comment!

See you Monday for Make It Monday!

Thoughts for Thursday

First of all, let me say thank you if you are tuning into my new blog!
My friend Sandy informed me last year I was a Maven. I have to admit I had no idea what that was, so upon looking up the definition, here is what I found...
"A maven (also mavin) is a trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others."

Well, I certainly do not consider myself an expert on anything, but I do LOVE to pass knowledge, tips, ideas, etc. onto others. Did you watch that show, "Oprah's Big Give"? I know, I know. Oprah can be a bit controversial amongst Christians now due to her new "religion" she is supporting. Despite all that....I loved that show! I so wanted to be on it. I would LOVE to give away stuff to random people in need. Hence, my weekly giveaways on The Gift Closet! Wednesdays will be "Win it Wednesday"! So stay tuned for that.

Thanks again for tuning in & if you're a fellow maven, have an idea you would to share, would like to be featured, or have a product you'd like to giveaway, let me know! I'm all about helping others, giving goodies away, & having a whole lotta' fun doing it!
